Date Night Ideas

Date nights make relationships stronger. This is a compilation of ideas for a date whether it’s a night out on the town or just stay indoors. These ideas range from expensive to do it for free. They are divided into five categories; Hunker in Stay-at-Home; Free dates away from home; doesn’t break the bank ($); the occasional splurge ($$); and date ideas for the deeper pocket ($$).

Hunker in Stay-at-Home

  • Play a board game or video game together
  • Have a picnic indoors. Add your checkered blanket, candles and music for added effect.
  • Cook a fancy meal together with candles after the kids have gone to bed.
  • Have a movie night
  • Star gaze under the stars
  • Sit down and write love letters. Have it set to 20 or 10 years from where you write. 20 to 10 years later, open them up together and read them to each other.
  • Indoor camping, pull out the tent and sleeping bags too.
  • Build a sheet fort
  • Have a camp fire or bonfire
  • Make chocolate covered strawberries or raspberries together.
  • Play bingo
  • Food fight!
  • Video record the story of how you met and fell in love.
  • Sit down and have a good conversation. Here is a list of questions that you can ask each other about if you are married or have kids.
  • Make a gratitude list together.
  • Make homemade donuts.
  • Play a prank on someone.
  • Have a cupcake war! See who can make the best cupcakes
  • Make up your own soup, just be prepared for it to taste nasty.
  • 1000-piece puzzle and pizza.
  • Make homemade ice cream
  • Have an ice cream tasting night, buy small containers of different flavors and eat together.
  • Make homemade slingshots and use marshmallows.
  • Create a rainy day bucket list
  • Write a rap song together.
  • Look at old photo albums
  • Read a book together
  • Play hangman, do crosswords or word searches together
  • Play cards or checkers
  • Start a new TV series together
  • Play nonsense scrabble. Play with fake words and make up the definitions of them on the spot.
  • Make crafts together for the upcoming holiday or someone’s birthday
  • Make a music video
  • Offer to babysit or pet sit for a friend.
  • Make treats and eat them together or deliver them to your neighbor
  • Give each other massages
  • Celebrate a random holiday.
  • Create your own holiday. Have rules, meals, traditions and mark the day to celebrate each year.
  • Pick a random place and plan a whole detailed vacation.
  • Make hand turkeys or do finger paints
  • Do a scavenger hunt around the house
  • Draw with chalk on your driveway
  • Make a bucket list together
  • Finger paint on canvas…or on each other.
  • Plan a trip together
  • Eat pizza on your roof together
  • Plant a garden
  • Do yoga together
  • Have your own photoshoot. Pick each other’s outfits, do each others makeup and create a great backdrop.
  • Write poems about each other
  • Do mad libs together
  • Find an animal that looks like everyone you know.
  • Learn magic tricks together
  • Have a movie marathon; Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, etc.
  • Take the “how well do you know each other” quiz.
  • Enjoy fondue together – cheese or chocolate
  • Have a culture night. Prepare dinner, play music and watch a movie from the other culture. (ex. India, China or Mexico)
  • Make a playlist together of when you first met.
  • Take YouTube dance lessons. Learn popular dances like the Harlem Shake, Dougie, Shuffling or Gangnam style.
  • Water gun fight
  • Hide n seek… in the dark
  • Have a Wii sports or Just Dance tournament
  • Reminisce about old photos and experiences.
  • Make homemade pizza.
  • Cuddle by the fire together
  • Do hand puppets or make shapes with your shadow
  • Create a mystery date jar. Write down suggestions on paper and fold them up. Pick out random pieces of paper anytime.
  • Play Snapchat hide-&-seek
  • Swap to-do lists and try your best to accomplish them.
  • Watch spy movies (unless you’re a spy, then that’s cheating)
  • Have a Nerf gun war.
  • Decorate mugs for each other. You can find cheap mugs and sharpies at the dollar store. Put them in the oven when done for a couple of minutes at about 325 degrees.
  • Make a relationship time capsule
  • Have a “finger foods” only dinner
  • Learn another language together. Apps like Duolingo are great.
  • Blind taste testing! Each of you gather some delicious treats like Oreos, peanut butter, strawberries, etc. Don’t let the other person see and see what they guess the treat is.
  • Rage war with paper airplanes.

 

Free Dates away from Home

  • Head to the beach
  • Use your gift cards. They are free after all.
  • Go for a bike ride
  • Go for a walk – go to a lake, in the moonlight, around your neighborhood, in the city, on the beach, by a river, wherever!
  • Go fishing
  • Gather some rolls of coins. Go to a local fountain and make wishes together.
  • Feed ducks at a local pond
  • Have BBQ with neighbors and friends
  • Take a scenic drive
  • Drive around looking at houses in the rich neighborhood.
  • Go for a hike
  • Go to a local hot spring
  • Find a rope swing nearby and conquer your fears
  • Climb a tree
  • Visit show homes, open houses, or parade of homes in your area
  • Swing in a hammock and watch the sunset together
  • Go to the library. You can read together, pick out books that you think represent each other, or write notes to put in your favorite book.
  • Volunteer at your local shelter or in your community
  • Swing at a park
  • Go geocaching
  • Build a giant slip n slide
  • Watch fireworks
  • Test drive you dream car. Did someone say Porsche?
  • Buy matching bracelets
  • Go to karaoke
  • For the adventurous, go dumpster diving. You never know what you might find.
  • Fly kites
  • Go pick fruit at your local orchard
  • Play Frisbee
  • Attend a book or poetry reading together
  • Play people watching bingo at the busiest place you know. (aka Walmart)
  • Check out your local community activities such as movies in the park
  • Run through the sprinklers or jump in a fountain (Warning: The latter is illegal in many places. Make it quick.)
  • Have an entire meal composed entirely of Costco samples.
  • Pretend you went on a fake vacation. Create photo evidence of the vacation that never happened. Shhh…
  • Go for a drive and get lost. You can only make right hand turns. See where it takes you. If you live in a grid based neighborhood switch it up. You can also use dice. 1-3 left hand turn & 4-6 right hand turn. See where it takes you. Have a picnic later on down the road and take pictures.
  • Write a fiction novel together. Go to local cafe and make up the story line together. When you get stuck just ask a stranger. They might surprise you.
  • Make a photo log of life as an invisible man. Take a pair of boots and a camera. Take pictures around the town.

 

Doesn’t Break the Bank ($)

  • Attend a local high school sporting event
  • Go to the dollar store and choose an activity or game. Don’t let each other see what you bought until you are out of the store.
  • Go out for ice cream
  • Play mini golf
  • Thrift store shopping
  • Take a pottery class or painting class
  • Paint on canvas
  • Be a child again and have fun at an arcade. Places like NickelCade or regular arcades are great. Make sure you cash in the tickets for some wicked awesome toys.
  • Paintball – if you’re up for the bruises.
  • Visit an art museum or planetarium
  • Go roller skating or ice skating
  • Visit each other for lunch during the week
  • Play Frisbee golf
  • Check out a local food truck.
  • Go laser tagging
  • Train for and run a 5k
  • Buy some freshly made bakery goods
  • Ride a Ferris wheel
  • Go to a county fair
  • Attempt to break a Guinness world record.
  • Take a salsa or swing dance class
  • Go to a garage or yard sale.
  • See a local band perform
  • Split a milkshake at the local diner
  • Go to the zoo or local aviary
  • Go to your local farmer’s market or flea market. Find a food that starts with each letter of the alphabet.
  • Go to a drive-in movie

  • Participate in a city-wide scavenger hunt. This is better to do in groups with neighbors or friends.
  • Go to the zoo or local aquarium
  • Dress up like superheroes and deliver basic needs care packages to homeless people on the street.

 

The Occasional Splurge ($$)

  • Go shopping
  • Go out to dinner at a new restaurant.

  • Go to the movie theater with popcorn
  • Go paddle boarding or kayaking
  • Indoor go-kart racing
  • Bowling
  • Trampoline Park
  • Horseback riding
  • Go to a room escape place.
  • Go rock climbing
  • Rent a tandem bike
  • Go to the gym together
  • Adopt a pet from an animal shelter
  • Learn how to shoot a gun
  • Learn how to surf

Dates for the Deeper Pocket ($$$)

  • Rent jet skis or wave runners
  • Go skiing, snowboarding or snowmobiling
  • Rent four wheelers or razors
  • Take a weekend road trip. Pull out the maps and don’t be afraid to get lost.
  • Attend a NBA, MLB, NFL, NHL, or MLS game (fun atmosphere and always unexpected).
  • Go skydiving
  • Go on a helicopter ride
  • Go zip lining
  • Go to an amusement park
  • Go to a local play, musical, ballet or comedy show
